Carl Sagan Jams Out

OK so I'm not really into the whole "space thing." I find it kind of interesting, but I'm not some huge advocate for space exploration. Yes, I realize there are reasons for exploring space. I also realize that we know very little about our own earth (look at the oceans! Watch Sea Quest DSV people!) and I realize that most people on this earth can barely eat. I'm not taking an ethical position here.

However, R really loves space stuff (I especially do if it involves Futurama...). His friends told him about this video, and he posted it on his Facebook wall. And now I'm sharing it with you all, just because I find it pretty friggin' great-the video is hilarious, not in a laugh out loud way but in a "Carl Sagan is one smooth MF". So enjoy!

there must be several of these going around, 'cause I saw another version elsewhere.

I also believe in prioritizing our spending and solving earth- and human-related ills first, but I think there are lots of terrible, wasteful things that should be cut before space exploration. after all, if humanity survives, I think life in space is pretty much unavoidable.

I'm not saying I disagree-I think there's lots that can be learned from space. But I think we have to prioritize taking care of our planet first, and not trying to colonize mars because we're just going to trash this place and there's no hope (Ray Bradbury's book was very influential on me on this point...I know it's sci-fi but I think he was on to something-same with Fahrenheit 451).

We could stop nuclear proliferation, for example. That's one place...

Anyway I just thought the video was great and had a nice beat to it. And the opening line about "if you want to bake an apple pie from scratch-firs you have to invent the universe" is awesome.

agreed, very awesome!

and I am all about taking those much needed means to salvage this place. I just think there's plenty of wasted (and utterly wasteful) spending we should worry about first.

Regardless of your political views on space and the exploration thereof, you can't help but be awed by this video. The talent of someone to go through all of his stuff and come up with this is pretty incredible.
